What I Want My White Friends to Know

A Chat with Chrystal Evans Hurst After the Dallas Police Shooting

white friends

We are quickly approaching the close of 2016 and I can’t seem to shake this feeling that this was the year that changed everything for me.

Just 48 hours following the brutal murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, I found myself here hoping to work through some of the associated deep emotional anguish and grief, but instead was interrupted by the news of another shooting just a few miles away. I had actually planned to attend that protest. A few days later, I expressed my feelings with a friend on her blog.

In my process of thinking about this critically, I think I was a tad bit too conservative and would have said so much more. White people, you need to do more, but I don’t want to forget this “beginners” conversation.

I don’t want to forget Alton, Philando, Walter, Korryn, Terrence, Freddie,……. (hundreds of names here).

I don’t want to forget. I don’t want you to forget.

Take a listen.
